When entering caves you enter a fasinating world like no other in the diving world. It has also been called the most dangerous sport in the world....in cave diving the key word is redundantcy....you want a back-up for your back-up, because in a cave there is NO quick escape back to the surface. Cavern diving is similar to cave diving although you don't go beyond the natural light entering the cave, although even cavern diving lights should be used. There are a few extremly important things to remember when cave/cavern diving....
-Get proper training
....no matter how experienced you think you are, you are entering a different world and many highly trained cave divers have died in caves!!!
-Rule of Thirds
....when cave diving this rule is written in stone....one third in, one third out and a third in case of emergencies. Even though you carry redundantcies, because the open sky can be 30 or 40 minutes away you MUST always follow this rule.
-Redundantcy
....always wear doubles with independent shut off valve at the minimum....the deeper penetrations carry an extra bottle even if its not a deep cave. Lights...at least 3...a lot of cave divers I know even carry an extra mask....be prepared for the worst and don't dive beyond your training.
-Reels
....always lay a line if going into a cave without a permenent line laid down...with and sometimes even without a silt-out situation you can become disoriented in a cave.Don't forget to clip on your arrows and if there is more than one line mark yours with something that lets you know its yours, so you don't end up following someone elses line deeper into the cave.
-Bouyancy Control
....as in wreck diving, cave diving also even more so requires perfect bouyancy control....one touch of the fin to the cave floor can silt out a huge area, not only will this make the dive much less enjoyable, it can be extremly dangerous....before entering a cave you should have extremly good bouyancy control.
-Relax
....cave diving is a wonderful, peaceful world....take it slow and deliberate and if you do run into a problem, DON'T PANIC....STOP, and think about what you're going to do...your training will come back to you. Below is a list of the cave diving agencies.
